LOCATION
Zelina

YEAR
2016

GROSS FLOOR AREA
230.00 m2

The family house in Zelina, reflecting a modern concept of living, has been designed in compliance with strict requirements for low-energy construction characterized by high levels of insulation and high energy efficiency which results in significant reduction of energy expenditure for space heating and cooling. The aim of low-energy house construction is to achieve optimal energy consumption and maximum utilization of available energy. Energy efficiency of low-energy buildings is based on the use of quality insulation layer, energy efficient windows and doors, air flow system which, in addition to ventilation, ensures additional energy saving as well the use of solar energy. Around 70% of overall energy consumption is used for space heating, and a low-energy building ensures great energy savings with negligible additional investments.

The house is positioned longitudinally in the east-west direction so as to ensure maximum benefits of the south orientation and view of the garden. It has been designed by simple protruding of the upper floor with respect to the ground floor and in that manner we have created a valuable outdoor space of the roofed terrace as a natural extension of the house’s interior space. The functional space organization is very simple. The living zone is situated on the ground floor, and the sleeping zone and a study is on the upper floor. Large, south-oriented windows let in adequate sunlight during the winter months and allow passive heating of the house in the manner that these spaces accumulate the heat and distribute it to other zones of the house. During the summer months, the house is protected from the sunlight by a cantilevered balcony and eaves. The ground floor functions mostly as a public or semi-public space with large openings overlooking the landscape. It consists of the living room, dining room and the kitchen which form a whole, and the entrance area with the staircase and the service rooms. In contrast, the upper floor functions as a private zone and is divided into the children’s area with two bedrooms and the pertaining bathroom, and the parents’ area consisting of a master bedroom and a bathroom. The upper floor also contains a study.

The outer appearance of the house is characterized by two volumes: the lower “cube” with a smooth white facade on which lies an elongated “rectangle” clad in HPL panels. By using a smooth, white facade in contrast to wood panelling, we have accomplished both the dynamics and the elegance of the facade.
