LOCATION
Stenjevec, Zagreb

YEAR
2015

GROSS FLOOR AREA
170.00 m2

The lot on which the family house is situated is in the residential area on the slopes of Medvednica Mountain, in the north-western part of Zagreb, on extremely steep buildable lot bordering a forest area. The client wanted a modern family house with rationally designed assortment of rooms to suit the needs of a modern family of four. The spatial concept of the house is determined by site’s steeply rising topography and quality west orientation overlooking the city and its interior is, therefore, vertically structured.

We conceived a house with a complex plan and volume, harmoniously integrated with the green slopes: closed and defensive on one side, and on the other side, open towards the outdoors and transparent. On the upper street side, we envisaged a pedestrian and road access inclined towards the house and the garage. The part of the building above ground is street-oriented and is perceived like a single–storey house, while the lower, basement part is visible from the garden. The upper (“visible”) part accommodates a garage and laterally–a slightly recessed house entrance. The house is functionally divided into a bedroom tract on the upper floor and the living zone in the basement. In order to maintain the intimacy of the bedroom zone, we envisaged an additional separate entrance to the lower (living) area from the north-east side with the exterior staircase leading to it. The main rooms (bedrooms, living room and kitchen with the dining room) are situated along the west front with glass walls opening towards the roofed outer terrace and balcony.

The dynamics of the facade is achieved by contrasting the smooth, white facade with an accentuated cantilevered roof and the warm wooden lining enveloping around the living and the circulation areas. Glass railings of the terraces and balconies enable an unobstructed view towards the garden and the surrounding nature. Facade openings have been carefully cut into the house membrane, which further contributes to the minimalistic elegance of the façade.
