Šalata, Zagreb

YEAR
2006-2009

GROSS FLOOR AREA
460.00 m2

Family house G is located in Šalata, in the residential part of Zagreb characterized by family houses of similar outlines, built on more or less even lots with carefully designed gardens and house plots. The urbanization process of this part of the city occurred in the middle of the past century and every new construction represents an interpolation into the existing urban tissue, making the proportions and the scale of the new structure one of the crucial issues to be respected. The building itself should ensure its tenants a very comfortable living in the centre of the city with maximum attention given to very particular neighbourhood standards.

The house in Šalata has been designed for a family with one child who wanted a simple, modern and comfortable family home. The house in composed of four functionally different floors connected by an internal staircase and an elevator. The basement floor has been designed partly as a utility area with a garage, laundry room and a storeroom and partly as a relax zone with an indoor pool. The ground floor is the entrance area with the living room, kitchen, dining room and a study. The first floor contains bedrooms while the last storey is recessed with regard to the other storeys and contains a multipurpose, open and extroverted space for relaxation, entertainment and creative work. This storey has window walls and is open to the terrace which offers an exquisite view of Zagreb.

The house has been conceived in the manner that the ground floor (living area) has window walls opening to the terrace thus connecting it to the garden and the outdoors on the east side of the lot. Therefore, the entire east façade is dominated by large glass surfaces so as to enable its tenants a view of the beautifully designed garden even from the 1st floor. The 1st floor contains the bedroom zone divided into children’s bedrooms and the master bedroom zone. The master bedroom zone contains the master bedroom, bathroom and the walk-in closet.

The house itself boasts of a sculptural volume and the materials used for the façade are in correlation with the spatial disposition of the rooms. By using the smooth, white façade in contrast to the openings, we have achieved both the dynamics and the elegance of the façade. The façade openings are cut into the structure thus emphasizing the monolithic character of the volume while the balconies and the eaves form sculptural elements which accentuate the façade.
