A young, married couple purchased an unfurnished apartment in Trešnjevka, Zagreb, and contacted us to help them arrange it and design a warm, comfortable interior. Their desire was to keep the existing layout of the rooms. Our task was to design the hallway, living room, kitchen, dining room and master bedroom, which would be both functional and elegant, in addition to choosing the furniture and coordinating the necessary works so as to save the investors’ time which they would otherwise spend on shopping and communication with contractors. Being lovers of refined simplicity, the owners chose not to experiment with the interior design and decided on neutral, warm and transparent hues of gray and brown in combination with white, while the details were to serve to introduce dynamics and playfulness in the interior. Given that the hallway, dining room, kitchen and living room are interconnected without fixed partitions and create an open, unified space, we had to decide on the colours and style which would be recurring in all the zones of the apartment and which would be reflected in the furniture elements.

To begin with, the clients wanted a wardrobe closet in the entrance hall and a glass-door cabinet in the dining room. In order to avoid the feeling of rooms being overcrowded with furniture, we have connected them into a joint, custom built-in structure connected at an angle thus ensuring maximum usage of space for storing things. The closet structure is made of white chipboard panels so as to achieve a visually wider space. Excessive whiteness and monotony are broken with niches made of wood-colour chipboard. In addition, the closet hides a sliding door which enables the entrance hall and the sleeping zone to be separated from the living zone. The dining room area is dominated by a simple, oak table with elegant dining room chairs made of grey textile and wood above which we have placed elegant, black pendant lamps.

Since the kitchen is recessed and lacks natural light, we decided on the use of light colours and quality illumination. We combined wood decor with horizontal pattern for the lower elements, white kitchen countertop and white matt chipboard for the upper elements. The colour of floor and wall tiles is also within the natural colour palette, which contributes to create a warm and elegant interior.

The living room located right “around the corner” has been organized so as to house a variety of activities – watching TV, hanging out or relaxing on the large, L-shaped sofa set, reading in the comfortable armchair or working at the desk. The biggest challenge was to design the part of the living room where the TV set would be, taking into consideration the slanted, oblique wall the irregularity of which had made it difficult for us to come up with a simple and functional solution. Therefore, we designed a new, straight wall the depth of which has been used as the niche for the library and the suspended TV bench. The workspace is partly built-in and shut-in from the rest of the living room and partly opens to the L-shaped sofa set and the rest of the living room with the shelves. The work desk has been designed as a floating desk inside the niche made of wood decor surrounded by cabinets and shelves in warm, light gray hew. The sitting area consists of a large, gray L-shaped sofa set, coffee table on wheels and an impressive, yellow-orange armchair. The dynamics and playfulness of the interior are achieved by introducing details such as multicolour cushions and the said armchair.

In designing this apartment, we have managed to satisfy all the requirements of a young family and create a simple, unique and comfortable living space which is, at the same time, both functional and elegant.
